Vanessa Marcotte, a 27-year-old Google employee and a graduate of Boston University, was killed on Aug. 7 while jogging near her mother’s home. Sources say her naked body had been partially burned.
Who was Vanessa Marcotte?
Marcotte grew up in Leominster, attended the Bancroft School in Worcester, and then graduated from BU in 2011 with honors. She was known for her love of running and volunteering. Friends and colleagues told WCVB she was loved, passionate and giving. Marcotte was living in New York City, where she worked for Google as an account executive.
“Vanessa Marcotte was a much loved member of the Google team, working in our New York office for the last year and a half, and known for her ubiquitous smile, passion for volunteer work, and love of Boston sports,” Google said in a statement. We are deeply shocked and saddened, and our thoughts are with her family and friends.”
DNA evidence and an alert state trooper helped find the man they believe killed a New York City woman last summer who was out running near her mother’s Massachusetts home, authorities said Saturday.
“Good afternoon. We got him,” Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. proclaimed at a news conference Saturday outside the police department in Princeton, a small community of about 3,500 residents in central Massachusetts. It’s about 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of Boston.
Authorities have arrested Angelo Colon-Ortiz in connection with the slaying of Vanessa Marcotte, who went jogging in Princeton last summer and never came home. Colon-Ortiz, 31, of Worcester, was arrested early Saturday morning, Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. announced at a press conference in Princeton on Saturday.
“We got him,” Early said. DNA was obtained from Marcotte’s hands during her autopsy. “On Friday, State Police found a match for that DNA,” Early said.
That match was from a cheek swab test that Colon-Ortiz previously consented to. “He was picked up at his residence in Worcester late Friday with the assistance of the Worcester police department,” Early said. “He was interviewed and subsequently placed under arrest.”
Colon-Ortiz will face charges including aggravated assault, aggravated assault and battery and assault with intent to rape, Early said. He will be arraigned in Leominster District Court on Tuesday.
